Pen Y Fan Horseshoe

Starting at Pont ar Daf car park we'll ascend Pen y Fan via Corn Ddu, following the river to the source of The Taff in the process and then continue on to the summit of Cribyn (if the groups ability and time allows). Lunch will be near The Windy Gap. We'll then follow the Roman Road through to the reservoir before heading uphill again and following the ridge to a point where we can cross country it straight down to our start point.

Not quite the horseshoe but a fine walk that is often off the beaten track and so feeling much more remote and like a true mountain day than the usual Pen y Fan events.

A great way to work off some extra pounds and to shake off the lethargy caused by too much socialising over the festive season.

Walk Off The Christmas Pud With A Waterfalls Walk

Blow away the Christmas cobwebs and walk off the over indulgence with this popular walk in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The ever popular Waterfalls Walk - this has become our entry walk for this group - is here for you during the festive break.

Every time we list this it sells out fast! Andy will be leading this walk in the waterfalls area of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The walk is generally available to most levels of ability but be minded that it is 10 miles long and involves some rough ground. Walking kit is desired and kinda essential at this time of the year.

We have had some young un's get round, the youngest being six years old. Some feel very tired at the end of this walk. Some not. We get to see eight waterfalls of note including two that you can walk behind.

We meet at The Angel Inn, Pontneddfechan but please don't use their car park. Car sharing will be arranged a week prior to the event and there is generally a pick up from the museum steps in Cardiff as well as at other locations by arrangement.

So, you need a packed lunch, waterproofs and walking boots. We can supply walking boots but we need to know shoe sizes in advance of the day and we recommend that if you don't have any just get a cheap-isa pair from Go Outdoors. We can advise on best buys. And why a cheap pair? Well, most go for fabric nowadays and we are advising go get a mid range boot and invest in waterproof socks, 'sealskins', as the membrane in even the most expensive fabric boot fails after a few weeks of walking.

Boxing Day Bimble For Tenovus Cancer Care

On Boxing Day Andy, the owner of Wales Outdoors and coordinator of Adventure Activity South Wales, the Wales Outdoors friendship group, will be leading a bit of a Bible from Brecon to chat and walk of some pud and to raise some cash for Tenovus Cancer Care.

Walk off the excess of Christmas with Andy in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park and take in a river, some woodland, an Iron Age fort and a Roman camp.

We will meet at Brecon Promenade Car Park. The walk is all off road and so walking boots/good wellingtons and clothing appropriate for the weather on the day is expected.

5 miles walked at a leisurely pace with one short hill.

Walk The Winter Wye Valley

On his way to London to visit his parents and sister for Christmas Andy Lamb, the Wales Outdoors owner, thought it would be a good idea to get in a walk along the way and what better than this beauty!

This is a fine walk and one that many were kicking themselves for not attending back in the autumn of 2017 so we've added it into the 2018 programme for the second time.

We meet at a small village, Whitchurch, where there is on the road parking and head off from there, first on road but soon alongside the meandering river. We gain the cafe at Symonds Yat for a cuppa and out come the cameras for the spectacular views over the river and Huntsham Hill.

It''s downhill and back to the riverside until we get to the wibbly wobbly bridge at Biblins, always fun to cross :) A great forest walk now ensues and we locate King Arthur's Cave and soon after the ramparts of an Iron Age Hill Fort, said to be the place where Vortigen fort a last stand before disappearing from history. It's then some delightful lanes back to the start point.

You will need walking boots, waterproofs and a packed lunch.

Winter Solstice Sunset On Pen Y Fan

Actually, this will be the last Sunset on Pen y Fan Walk - we've added this one as it's the Winter Solstice and we'll be in the area anyway due to a sunrise walk planned in the morning.

Please bring a torch and wear clothing appropriate for the walk, so walking boots and warm layers and waterproofs.

This is a guided walk to the summit of Pen y Fan (the highest mountain in Southern Britain) in time for the sunset.

Amazing skies are not guaranteed but a fun walk led by a mountain leader and the Wales Outdoors team is.

The walk to the summit will follow the main path which offers no real difficulties but walking boots are advised. It can be cold on the top even in good weather so warm layers and waterproofs are essential.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

We will be leaving the car park promptly at 2.30pm so please arrange to be at the car park a little earlier than this.

Once this is sold out there will be no more spots made available but do look out for similar future events and book on one of those :)

We charge for these walks in order to have a vibrant and exciting range of events available to group members. The charge ensures that the groups programme is sustainable.

The Wales Outdoors team are reactive and will arrange for walks or adventurous activities to be made available as demanded so please give us a shout and tell us what you would like to see on the programme.

Megaliths, Sunrise And Ancient Rituals - A Winter Solstice Walk

The Brecon Beacons have a wealth of megaliths and this walk sees us wander around a few but most interestingly take part in a ritual watching of the rising sun that the ancients surely must have not only witnessed but, celebrated. We'd go even further, they placed stones to mark the spot that offers the best view of the sun rising between the twin peaks of Corn Ddu and Pen y Fan.

'We will meet at the Brecon Beacons National Park Mountain Centre and if the weather is good for us we'll witness a timeless event, sunrise as the ancients would have seen it on the shortest day of the year.

It is believed that the stones that dot the landscape in the Brecon Beacons are aligned and mark an ancient spot which we'll visit in order to observe the sun rising, hidden, until it emerges from behind Pen y Fan's ridge to reveal itself in the Bwlch formed with Corn Ddu and Pen y Fan.

We will then go for a walk and locate the aligned stones as well as take a drive to have a look at Maen Llia, the largest standing stone in the area and a fine marker... but... for what?

Walk Pen Y Fan And The Central Brecon Beacons

This is a tough day - the last attempt we managed about half of this route - the weather wasn't playing ball.

Andy, the Wales Outdoors owner, will lead this walk. Starting at a lay-by on the A470 we'll walk a route that will see us rather alone for a good deal of the day despite walking to the summit of the highest mountain in Southern Britain, Pen y Fan.

We'll follow the Nant Crew past some delightful pools before striking uphill and gaining the ridge. Here we will descend to Neuadd Reservoir and cross it's dam and the remains of Welsh Water workings.

We'll head up the Roman Road and skirt around Cribyn before the second uphill of the day to the summit of Pen y Fan. From here it's downhill all the way to the start point and we are sure Andy will then twist your arms for a stop off at The Nant Ddu Lodge for a cuppa or something stronger :)

This is a fine mountain day with two steep ascents and one steep descent and with a fair proportion of the walk being cross country, so moving over open ground or along sheep tracks.

You will need walking boots, waterproofs and a good packed lunch.

We're Walking The Waterfalls Next Weekend!

These popular walks in the Brecon Beacons National Park Waterfalls Area and led by the knowledgable owner of Wales Outdoors, Andy Lamb, are a great way to meet other walkers who are likely members of Adventure Activity South Wales and to stretch your legs over the weekend. This walk is on the 15th December.

This is a favourite walk for this group and one we fit in every few months since the huge success during October 2017 when we offered this for five days and got 125 people around!

Our route is 10 miles long and it takes all day at a sustained leisurely pace. We have stops for photos and to be awed by the majesty of our surroundings and of course of the waterfalls, two of which we will be able to walk behind!

These walks sell out FAST so do get in early to secure your spot. Walking boots, waterproofs and a good packed lunch are essential :)

New Year In Snowdonia

That's the view from the bunkhouse! We have sole use of this fine group accommodation location :)

At 2016/17 New Year Wales Outdoors booked a bunkhouse and eight of us got away from the madness that is the festive season for a couple of nights and a few days walking. It was a great success so we're doing it again :)

The bunkhouse is in the Ogwen Valley and overlooks The Glyders and Tryfan. The proposed itinerary is:

Saturday 10am - Walk from the bunkhouse to The Glyders via Llyn Ogwen and The Devils Kitchen.

Sunday 11am - A walk taking in the ridge behind the bunkhouse and do as much as we feel like doing. This will be some of the lesser mountains in The Carneddau.

Monday 10am - Walk up Tryfan.

Tuesday 10am - A mornings walk around a lake near Betws y Coed and then depart.

The cost for the three nights accommodation and three and a half days guiding is a very reasonable £125pp. This will include any kit you might require but does not include transport or food. Car sharing will be encouraged.

Andy will be teaching map and compass skills to those that want to learn.

Tenerife Expedition January 2019

This trip is a stunner... Join Andy in his winter home for a week of walking on this highly memorable island. This is a stripped down and budget walking holiday in Tenerife. There is a good deal of trust in Andy's knowledge of the island in this trip but we will have a car in support and so water and other essentials will be well provided for.

Walking is with daypacks or with backpacks, depending on the overnight arrangements. Andy can advise on lightweight backpacking. The car is used as support for the trip. However, we can drop off some kit at San Sofi Hostel as there will be a night there towards the end of the trek or we can leave stuff in the car.

ITINERARY Monday 21st - Fly Cardiff to Tenerife South - A night on the beach with campfire and tall tales :)

Tuesday 22nd - Walk to camp midway between San Miguel and Vilaflor. Overnight in an ancient made mad cave complex.

Wednesday 23rd - Walk to El Teide's caldera rim for an overnight there. We should have a spectacular sunrise!

Thursday 24th - Walk to El Teide's summit at 3700m for sunset before descending towards the West - Overnight camp high on the mountain or if feeling energetic descending via the stunning Pico Viejo and Roques de Garcia towards or to The Parador Hotel.

Friday 25th - Back to the car at the Parador. Transit to Masca for stunning views and a descent of the Masca gorge. Overnight in the gorge.

Saturday 26th - Boat trip to Los Gigantes and some ice cream, shopping, or easy living before a few hours on a beach and then the evening spent in San Sofi Hostel in San Miguel.

Sunday 27th - A well deserved beach day, maybe the 'hippy beach' or Andy's secret infinity pool, with a final night camping on the beach.

Monday 28th - Fly Home

This is a sea to summit challenge - a walk from the airport to the top of mighty El Teide... Week long guided walking holidays in Tenerife are usually about £1500 and unguided, so you fly in and are given a route map and set off come in at about £800 COST

I am offering this walk for a team of four for a grand total, excluding flights which are Cardiff to Tenerife South and currently costing £120 (maybe cheaper from Bristol and definitely cheaper from Stanstead at £80), and excluding food, for £295!!!
