As many of you may know, Andy the Wales Outdoors owner, lives an itinerant lifestyle, based from his van or a cave in Tenerife or a tent in the hills. Well, now he's added a yacht to the list of 'houses'.
The boat is a 1969 Snapdragon 26, a bilge keeled sailing yacht that was built with extra thick GRP and so is super strong and safe, easy to sail and when in good condition highly sought after.
Externally renovated, at least in part, Andy will be continuing with the project by first having the mast stepped and all standing rigging replaced and at the same time have the sail rigging set up for solo use.
Internally the boat is a bit of a shed. Tidy enough for sailing but not for living. Andy is planning a full refurbishment over the autumn to include insulating the hull, moving the sea toilet from the fore to midships, building a fixed double bed in the fore cabin and panelling the interior of the galley and salon areas.
While doing this work all plumbing and electrics will be looked at and replaced where needed.
Andy's been told that a boat is not an investment but a drain on finances but the addition of days on the sea and a fixed base to live and work from in Cardiff is well worth the work and cost.
A driving force in this decision has been the increasing car crime in Cardiff and off the back of two break-ins in 2018 Andy was minded to either leave the UK or to obtain secure parking. Obviously the second option won out. 'Alakiefik' will be moored at Penarth Marina.
You'll be able to visit Andy as soon as the boat is on the water with it's mast raised and any offers of skilled assistance with the renovation is very much appreciated :)
