Over the Whitsun Week May Bank Holiday Weekend Andy Lamb, the Wales Outdoors owner, led a group of eight wild country backpackers on a trip in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
They met at Pontneddfechan and kitted up in The Angel Inn before heading off on a short walk to the first campsite, that lovely area of flat ground that sits above Sgwd Gwladys, a wonderful waterfall about thirty minutes walk from the pub.
Most were new to wild country backpacking and so guidance on pitching tents and use of the cooksets - all available to hire from the Wales Outdoors fb shop - was given but there was a problem... MIDGES!!! And they were as bad as any damp corner of Scotland at this time of the year! So, it was an unnexpected early night for all...

Morning saw us up and out and away as soon as was possible. Andy had the group take its in turns to map read read their way through the waterfalls area and out onto the open hill near Ystradfellte Reservoir before striking camp near the mountain pass marked by the huge neolithic standing stone known as Maen Llia.
This was better - they could sit and chat around the tents, at least until the thunder and lightning and the short but sharp downpour.
Then it was trek back to the start point, re-tracing our steps a little on the final paths through the forest and beside the waterfalls. All in all Avery successful trip which much learning being taken on board and tired but smiley faces for all :)
