Wales Outdoors have a long history of providing abseiling in Wales, from Cardiff City Centre charity building abseils through abseiling at South Wales and Brecon Beacons crags, both coastal and inland, through abseiling off of bridges in Mid Wales to delivering abseils in the home of Welsh climbing in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. The Wales Outdoors team have been brought in by media production companies to provide safe delivery of abseiling for films and TV shows as well as by groups of all types from stag and hen parties through to youth groups, staff days out and for families.
Our abseil kit is modern and well cared for and we work well within the outdoor industries guidelines for retirement of kit. Did you know that harness' have a five year manufacturers warranty or that rope, no matter how much or little it's used, has a shelf life? We are the only company that we know of that make use of the great DMM Belay Master Karabiner which, due to it's plastic gate, ensures safe attachment and prevents crossloading which can be an issue when weight is taken on and off the system, as is usual when novices are abseiling.
So, how is an abseiling half day managed?
We will meet you at the activity location or by arrangement at your accommodation for a drive to the location, and then we will kit up. You will be given a helmet, a harness and a DMM Belay Master Karabiner and we will go through some warm up exercises and perhaps a little bouldering, encouraging you to become familiar and comfortable with the rock climbing environment.
We will set up the abseil, it doesn't take long, and if you wish you can view this process and become familiar with the safety considerations inherent with setting up and well constructed abseiling system.
Then it's up to you! We will usually offer a shorter and a longer abseil and encourage a progression from one to the other.
We will always have you on a safety line so that although you are abseiling and have full control of your descent we will be acting as a back up system so that if you let go of all controls we would have you firmly attached to the safety line.
If you are a climber looking for an improver session, getting to know how to climb outdoors and looking for a better understanding of abseiling exits from a climb, then we will go through use of a prusik, having someone at the bottom of the crag act as a safety line etc.
Go get out on the crag with Wales Outdoors!
