Wales has plenty of open water for some wild swimming from the ocean, including some swimmable sea caves, through ponds, reservoirs and lakes to slow moving rivers.
The Wales Outdoors friendship group Adventure Activity South Wales will be running a monthly wild swimming meetup from April 2018 in various locations across South Wales. The aim is to get out there, improve our swimming skills and to be safe exploring those places that rarely see people taking a dip.
To this end Andy, the Wales Outdoors owner, has sourced some great wild swimming kit including tow-floats and dry bags and you can purchase these in the Wales Outdoors Facebook Page Shop.
Wales Outdoors can supply wetsuits but we also recommend wet suit socks or booties and perhaps gloves for the colder months. We will be adding these to the Facebook shop in the New Year. For some of the longer swims micro fins are a good idea - we're thinking of coastal trips in the ocean here...
WHAT YOU NEED FOR WILD SWIMMING IN WALES (* indicates 'not essential but good to have')
Tow-float or dry bag
Snacks and a drink
In the high summer these swims will be as bare as you dare ;) but you rarely get a day in Wales good enough for that. A rash vest as a minimum is usually required if you want to stay in the water for any length of time and more often than not a good wetsuit is required.
